Thursday is trying to steal the whole week
The calendar does a funny thing this week: the giant comedy ticket, the free park jazz, and the mansion-courtyard Bond night all crowd into the middle of the week, like Cedar Rapids collectively forgot weekends were an option.
That leaves Saturday to do something more physical, more local, and more room-led: Latin Dance Night at The Ideal. Then CSPS picks up both ends of the spectrum, from underground metal to a seated Sunday Americana close.
This is a good week to go out twice, maybe three times, and let each night be its own kind of city.

This week pairs the Paul Lichty Jazz Orchestra with Prairie High School's Jazz on 76th, and KCCK broadcasts the whole thing live on 88.3 FM. Low friction, high payoff, no ticket math.
Latin Dance Night with DJ Edwin Valladares

This is not a stand-around-and-watch Saturday. DJ Edwin Valladares builds the room around salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, and Latin favorites, which means the dance floor is the point from the first song.
Come with a partner, come with friends, or come ready to meet people once the lights drop. Either way, The Ideal is giving the weekend a pulse that feels different from the amphitheater rush.
Goldpine

Goldpine is the graceful landing after a loud week: Nashville Americana, close harmonies, and the kind of seated CSPS room that rewards actually listening.
The duo's resume has NPR's Mountain Stage and a Kansas City Chiefs national-anthem gig on it, but the better reason to go is simpler. Sunday night could use a clean, human song.
The Main Event
John Mulaney turns Thursday into the big night
Thursday, August 13 · Gates 7 PM, show 8 PM · McGrath Amphitheatre Tickets There is no clever way around it: this is the biggest ticket on the corridor calendar, and it lands on a Thursday just to make the week behave weirdly. Mulaney's outdoor sets have the right scale for McGrath Amphitheatre, where even the lawn can feel like part of the joke if you arrive early enough and settle in properly. Go because the whole city will be comparing notes Friday morning.
The Weeknight Move

The smartest midweek move is the one that makes Wednesday feel dressed up without making it hard. Brucemore's courtyard gives you the mansion-lawn version of that: outdoor seats, summer air, and six decades of Bond themes reworked for the night.
Artisan in Residence Gerard Estella leads the program with vocalists Stephanie Goff and Allison Yoder Hershberger. Bring a blanket if you are going casual, or claim a table and make it feel like plans.

This is the corridor's underground scene showing up with its own gravitational pull: two nights at CSPS, split between the Black Box and Performance Hall, with bands coming in from across North America.
Friday's pre-show is headlined by Chicago's Gored Embrae, and Saturday closes with Cleveland death-metal headliner Mutilation Barbecue. It is loud, specific, and much bigger than the casual calendar scroller will realize.
