This week rewards the people who look twice
August opens without one giant calendar bully demanding the whole town’s attention. Good. That leaves room for the nights built carefully enough to earn yours.
There is live jazz drifting out of a park bandshell, saved scraps becoming handmade journals, a Cedar Rapids singer returning to a mansion lawn, and The Olympic turning a tropical dress code into a fundraiser with actual heart.
The weekend even gives you 18,000 ears of sweet corn and an Iowa baseball movie watched from a golf cart. None of it needs to shout.
Read the calendar slowly. The good stuff is hiding in plain sight.

St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival

Fifty-one years in, this parish carnival knows exactly what it is doing: hot buttered sweet corn, rides, games, live music, a beer tent, and the satisfying machinery of a neighborhood tradition run by people who have practiced.
Keep your Friday or Saturday wristband and Sunday admission is free. Come hungry; volunteers husked 18,000 ears on Thursday for a reason.
Junk Journal Workshop

Your ticket stubs, receipts, odd paper scraps, and small pieces of everyday life deserve better than a drawer. This workshop turns that saved ephemera into a bound keepsake you will actually want to revisit.

Mini Pines Movie Night: Field of Dreams

Watching Iowa’s own baseball myth from behind the wheel of a golf cart is almost suspiciously on-theme. Registration includes a round of mini golf before the movie and free popcorn once the screen lights up.

Hawaiian shirts, leis, tropical energy, and live music turn The Olympic into a vacation-state-of-mind fundraiser built by people who take unserious fun seriously. Underneath the coconut bras is a genuine reason for the room to fill: proceeds support the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End Alzheimer’s campaign. Jazz Under the Stars: Joey Schnoebelen Quintet

KCCK’s August park series opens with the Joey Schnoebelen Quintet and North Scott High School’s Night School, all broadcast live on 88.3 FM as it happens.
This is the cleanest decision of the week: bring a chair or blanket, pack a picnic if you like, and let Thursday become a concert without buying a ticket or building a complicated night around it.

Cedar Rapids-raised vocalist Melissa Tormene returns from performing internationally for a night sold on music and laughter in equal measure. Bring a chair or blanket and take the intimate setting as the feature, not the limitation.
LOOKING AHEAD John Mulaney brings Mister Whatever to the riverThursday, August 13 · Gates 7 PM, show 8 PM · McGrath Amphitheatre · $79+ · TICKETS One of the country’s biggest stand-up names lands in Cedar Rapids next Thursday with his newest tour and a very special guest. This is the next-week ticket to lock now. Reserved seats and lawn options make it workable, but the room will not get easier to buy as August 13 gets closer.
