This week is built around one big Saturday and a handful of quieter reasons to go out before it arrives. Market After Dark takes over downtown on the 29th, but the better plan is not just to drift through the lights and call it a night.
The Ideal is waiting with the fourth annual After Market After Dark, a Y2K dance-floor bit that turns the city's unofficial last big summer night into something stranger after hours. Before then, The Olympic opens the room for a storytelling series, CSPS brings in a national blues traveler, NewBo wraps a Friday summer ritual, and Lion Bridge gives Sunday readers a reason to trade books over a fresh lager.

Community Book Swap & Library Lager Release

Lion Bridge pairs the second round of its community book swap with the release of Library Lager, which is almost too tidy in the best possible way: bring a book, leave with a book, drink something named after the errand.
This isn't the week's loudest pick. It's the small, specific Sunday thing that makes a brewery feel like a neighborhood institution instead of just a taproom.
The Main Event
After Market After Dark goes full Y2K

That's the city's big glowing Saturday. The Ideal's fourth annual After Market After Dark knows exactly what to do with the spillover. DJ Joe turns the room back to 2000, the dress code is whatever you'd wear if the world were ending (or not) and the whole thing works because it waits for downtown to peak before taking the night somewhere weirder. Do the market. Then let the afterparty have the last word.

Former proprietor of Mahoney's Pub in Cedar Rapids and The Famous Mockingbird in Marion, Dennis Mahoney hosts a monthly storytelling series and open dialogue about what happiness really is, where to find it, and how to keep it showing up in your life.
There's no band here—just Dennis, the guest he has invited that month, and an audience that shows up specifically for that. It's intimate by design, conversational rather than performative, and offers a different kind of Thursday night...and possibly a life-changing perspective.
