The best nights out don’t announce themselves.

Saturday night, a 101-year-old speedway at Hawkeye Downs gets 6,000 tons of dirt back under its racers. No orchestra, no velvet rope, just a quarter-mile oval and a crowd that filled the stands last year.

Thursday, Newfound Road brings 25 years of Ohio bluegrass to The Ideal for its first Eastern Iowa show. Same night, The Olympic hosts the Recycle Gala, a celebration of creativity and community in support of local homeownership.

Nothing on this list is trying to be a headliner. That’s most of the appeal.

Three Things We’d Actually Leave the House For

Iowa Renaissance Festival & Gathering o’ Celts

Saturday–Sunday, October 17–18 · 10 AM–6 PM · Amana Community Park, Amana · Free parking · Details

Horseback jousting, swordplay, pirates, and fairies share the grounds with more than 60 merchant booths and a food court that pours mead and ale. Tickets are sold at the gate or online. This is the last of the festival’s four 2026 weekends, so it’s last call for the year.

Harvest Hayrack Night

Friday, October 16 · 6–8 PM · Ushers Ferry Historic Village · $8–$12 · Kids 5 and under free · Details

Ride a hayrack through the valley, toast a marshmallow, and make a simple craft. Then head to the village saloon for card games and free popcorn. It’s a small, slow, very good way to spend a Friday, and the program returns October 30.

Recycle Gala

Thursday, October 15 · 6–10 PM · The Olympic South Side Theater · Details

The Olympic hosts an evening of creativity and community in support of local homeownership. Past galas have sent garments made from recycled materials down the runway, which tells you the kind of night this is: handmade, a little theatrical, and for a good cause. Ticket details are on The Olympic’s event page.

The Main Event

Dirt on the Downs

Saturday, October 17 · Gates noon · Hot laps 5:30 PM · Racing 6 PM · Hawkeye Downs Speedway · Tickets at the gate · Details Hawkeye Downs was founded in 1925 as a dirt track and ran on dirt until the mid-1980s. This fall, about 6,000 tons of dirt return to the quarter-mile oval for Dirt at the Downs, and the track plans to keep it dirt through at least 2027. Specialty Racing Promotions runs the night, and last year’s Dirt at the Downs filled the stands. A Saturday night at a 101-year-old track that’s reinventing itself by going backward is this week’s best argument for leaving the couch.

The Weeknight Move

Newfound Road

Thursday, October 15 · Doors 6:30 PM / Show 7:30 PM · The Ideal Theater & Bar · $20 plus fees · All ages · Tickets

The Ohio bluegrass band is marking 25 years together with its first show in Eastern Iowa, a Billy Blue Records deal, and six second-round IBMA nominations.

The Ideal is an intimate listening room, so every voice and instrument carries. It’s a great Thursday for anyone who’s never thought of themselves as a bluegrass person.

Plus One Thing You Might Miss...But Shouldn't Overlook

Ellis House Halloween Toddler Rave

Saturday, October 17 · 10–11 AM · Ellis House, 1200 Ellis Blvd. NW · $15 through October 16, $20 at the door if available · Tickets

A live DJ, club-style lighting without the aggressive strobes, bubbles, and an open dance floor, with costumes encouraged. It’s recommended for ages 1 to 6, every adult needs a ticket, and kids under 1 are free. Strollers stay off the dance floor.

It’s the rare kids’ event that takes the dance floor seriously.

Looking Ahead

Ghost stories, antiques, and a front-lawn light show

October 24–30 · Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha

Saturday, October 24, Spooky Legends of Linn County takes over the History Center lawn: pumpkin painting at 6 PM, then local ghost stories from storyteller Darrin Crow at 7. General admission is $6. The next day, more than 50 dealers fill Hawkeye Downs for the Midwest Antique & Art Show.

Thursday, October 29, Frankenstuffies is an adult DIY craft night at Hiawatha Public Library, 6–7:30 PM, moved from its original October 20 date. Then Friday, October 30, the Fall Front Lawn A/V Experiment brings records and multi-channel video projection to the Tree of Liminality, 1301 Third St. SE. It’s free, 7–10 PM, and the suggested costume is a well-known artist or artwork.
